Physical Theatre & Naturalistic Acting

BIRD SEQUENCE

During drama we were introduced to two new acting techniques. Physical theatre is a technique in which the actors use their bodies to create the illusion of another person, animal, object, etc. Naturalistic acting is the actors acting naturally.
Our task was to make a bird using just our bodies. My group, Jeffrey, Lola, Fatmata, and Chloe, and myself, created such a bird that I myself thought was quite impressive. Jeffrey mounted as the body of our bird. Lola & Fatmata were acting as the wings of the bird, whilst I and Chloe acted as the tail of the bird. We were set simply instruction as to make our bird walk then fly from a sleeping position. Lola & Fatmata had to move their bodies in a waving motion on show the movement of the bird’s wings. Jeffrey was our anchor, so when he started to move we knew our cues to follow in his steps. Before we did this task, as a class we discussed which parts of the bird were most important. This helped us decide which parts of the bird we would all become.
After this, we had to get into role and act as if we were one. Miss Robertson called out instructions to us, such as you are waking up, flapping your wings, seeing another bird, circling another bird, ect. This exercise was rather fun but also difficult. As I played the tail, I was actually facing the opposite way this made it hard for me to know where I was going and on occasion I came out of role and lost the rest of ‘me’.

How should I want to improve my group's work?
Is there anything I can do personally to improve?
